Gun Action Role Playing Game
A massive change from the standard RPG style of Final Fantasy VII, Dirge Of Cerberus' battle system is dubbed 'Gun Action RPG,' the battle system and gameplay is fashioned from a standard Third Person Shooter genre game. The overall gameplay is a bit varient of standard Third Person Shooters. With Vincent, you can control complete movement, such as melee attacks, kick, punch and of course the gun control. there are three total catergories of actions, Basic Actions, Melee Actions and Gun Actions. Since Vincent is essentially the only character you have control over the course of the game, we can only count Vincent in as the basic control. Basic Actions comprise of two different sub-catergories, Jumping and Aerial Combos and Reloading. Most are straightfoward. Jumping should be straightfoward as well, but Aerial Combos are something else. Aerial Combos can be executed when Vincent is still in the air from Jumping. Vincent can then use two different types of aerial combos. From there, Melee Combos and using Vincent's current equiped weapon you can attack enemies midair. The second type of action is the Melee Combo.

There are three types of Melee attacks, Gaunlet Hand Attacks, Kick Attacks and Enemy Melee Attacks. In a ground melee combo, Gaunlet Hand attacks and Kick attacks are inculded in a ground melee combo. Gaunlet hand attacks, and kick attacks are successive, a combination, first you start with multiple gaunlet strikes and then followed by a kick to finish the enemy. Air melee combos have the same application and execution. The melee attacks are good to use when enemies stopped or are not currently in motion. Using melee attacks when a enemy is currently attacking you is not the best option.

There are three different types of weapons, The Handgun, named Cerberus, Machine Gun and the Rifle. Despite the low amount amount of weapons in a First Person Shooter, Dirge Of Cerberus limited weapons are used more for the customization module of the game. Within Dirge Of Cerberus the Customization feature allows players to customize Vincent's weapons for their own benefit. The Customization Module allows players to customize weapons with different items, such as Normal Barrel III or Fire Materia, allows the customization of and improvement to any weapon it is equiped to. Depending on what type of scenario Dirge Of Cerberus is currently in, the three types of weapons become useful and better for each type of field and the enemies range and attacking abilities. The Handgun should be used when charging the enemy front, such as when Vincent is in Kalm and charging the Deepground Soliders. The Machine Gun weapon type should be used when Vincent has alot of enemies to battle, or a slow, large boss. The Rifle should be used when encountering long range enemies.
