Junction System
The mildly-confusing Junction System is the replacment to the regular Magic and Ability system used in other Final Fantasies and other Role Playing Games. Instead of learning Magic or Action Abilities, you junction different Magic stock to allow you to use the ability. In previous installments of the Final Fantasy series, Magic and abilites were learned through stat and level, but in Final Fantasy VIII, you can use any magic you want to use at any time, provided you have the stock for the magic. When you junction either Magic or Guardian Forces, you junction them to any stat you'd like.
Stocks and Draw Points
How you gain stock is the important factor in Final Fantasy VIII. The only way to accquire stock is by either accessing Draw Points or drawing stock from enemies. Draw Points are noticable points in the game that can be accessed by the field. Once you can see any draw point, you can draw from the Draw Point when you move Squall over the Point and press 'X'. The Stock you recieve will vary, as well as the amount of Stock. Once you drain all the stock currently from the Draw Point, it will take a while for it to regenerate the Stock. For example, you can't draw from the draw point and then leave the area and come back and expect for there to be sufficent stock. It may take a while for it to return to the full capicty, some Draw Points regenerate faster than others.
Junctioning Guardian Forces
Junctioning Guardian Forces is the only way you can access and use a GF in battle. Guardian Forces grow and level like characters, so they learn new abilites that improve their stats. When you junction a GF, you have to take into account many factors. First off, Compatibility. Chararcters are good with certain GF's and vise versa. If you junction a GF with a certain character, and then switch, that is not a good thing. The Character you switch to may take a while to be compatible and the effects could result in Slower Summoning, and weaker effect of the Guardian Force. So it's better to leave GF's alone with one character rather than to switch their Junction partner. You may want to first pick a character and the Main GF to correspond with the Character, that way better compatibility will be in effect, and Maximum Strength of the GF will be in play.
Junctioning Attributes
When you junction a certain stock to a stat, the stat will be effected by the Stock junctioned. Either the stat will increase or decrease depending on the stock chosen. Taking into consideration other Stats, Some stock junctioned could effect the increase or decrease in the stat. When junctioning a certain amount of stock, the number of stock you have can effect the increase and decrease of the stat. The maximum number you can junction to any stat is 100. When you junction certain different stocks to certain stats, you can cause status changing effects. For example, if you junctioned 'Poison' to your Strength stat, you might get the ability to inflict status change of Poison when you attack a enemy. Alternately, if you junction 'Poison' to the Defense stat, you can possibily get the effect of when a Enemy attacks, they can get inflicted with the status ailment, 'Poison.' Since you can only have a limit of 100 stock of any different stock, you can only junction all 100 to a character. When you chose to use Magic in a battle, you can only use Stock that is currently junctioned to the selected character, meaning if you use any Magic, the loss of the stat increasw or decrease that is currently junctioned to will lose its full effect before you use the Magic stock.
